Traditional 3-Tab Shingles vs. Architectural Shingles

What are the differences between 3-Tab and architectural shingles?

Three-tab shingles have been covering houses in North America from the early days of the 20th century. They where predominantly made from bitumen and organic materials, but more recently have been made of modified bitumen and fibreglass. Architectural or laminate shingles started to appear on the North American market in the mid to late 1970’s. At first, the designer shingles where offered as premium product, as they where deemed more attractive and weather resistant than traditional 3-Tab shingles. By the mid 1990’s, architectural shingles had become price competitive, and they are now widely used for re-roofing homes and in new construction. Asphalt shingles, both 3-tab and architectural, protect more than 80% of the residential home in North America.

To provide our customers the most options in their roofing choices, we install both types of shingles. How do they compare?

Appearance: 3-Tab Shingles vs Architectural Shingles

The most obvious difference between 3-Tab and Architectural shingles is the look. Architectural shingles are made to have wood shake or slate like appearances, while 3-Tab shingles have a brick styling. Many homeowners prefer the textured appearance and character of architectural shingles to that of the simpler 3-tab shingles.

Typical Warranties: 3-Tab Shingles vs Architectural Shingles

Building Product of Canada

Architectural shingles offer greater resistance to the weather than 3-tab shingles. They last longer and are backed by better warranties.

Price: 3-Tab Shingles vs Architectural Shingles

The cost of 3-tab shingles has been traditionally lower than that of architectural shingles. However, modern-day manufacturing techniques have made the price of architectural shingles, such as BP’s Mystique product line, competitive with, if not more cost effective than 3-Tab shingles. The greater lifespan and warranties of architectural shingles gives them a superior quality to price ratio.
